Usually, my marketing team asks me a few days before they want to send out the newsletter: „We need a new editorial from you.“ I’m writing a few lines about things going on in German, and someone will take care of the translations into French, Italian, and English. This is efficient for me, as it doesn’t take too much time. However, this time it’s different. I’m writing in all four languages myself, allowing only a common dictionary and the spell correction of LibreOffice. No DeepL, no artificial intelligence (AI). My Italian is rather limited (B1 they say), and my French is a bit better (B2) along with English. Why? Because you are not interested in generated marketing nonsense. You want to read what we really think. The true spirit of Init7. Recently we made an experiment to see how far we are with AI. Last year I gave a little welcome speech at our #NerdsUnited gathering, in German, with a printed English translation. This year, we asked ChatGPT to do the speech and animated it with the AI app “HeyGen https://app.heygen.com/ ”. It requires some raw video material we recorded in front of a green screen. Of course, ChatGPT generated a text full of platitudes. Like a politician's monologue, a lot of words without content. Nevertheless, it’s astonishing how far AI can go. My English—I've chosen an Australian accent—is much better than my real English with the terrible Swiss accent. Though a young man born and bred in Australia told me that the Australian accent is actually “upper class” and not like how ordinary Australians talk. On the other hand, someone told me that he always prefers the real Fredy, not hisdigital twin https://player.vimeo.com/video/1115405500.

Bits & Bites #13

Winterthur, 02.10.2025

Hello [Vorname] [Nachname]

AI Fredy Künzler

Recently, in the tenants chat group of my apartment building, some expat was upset about the, in his opinion, poor English skills of the building administrator. I actually thought this was quite arrogant, as his German skills are probably even worse. I think everybody should at least try to adapt to local habits and host languages. As I always get recognition when trying, no matter how many mistakes I make.

Last week, the new director of the Federal Office of Communications OFCOM, Gianna Luzio, was elected by the Federal Council.

Watching the press conference, I was impressed how she was able to talk fluently in all four official languages of Switzerland, including Romanic. Note that English is not official, despite being widely spoken. I think that multilingualism is a good sign to be wary of the unity in our country.

GeoIP: How the internet recognises your location

It is well known that there are countless applications that evaluate and display the position of users on the basis of GPS data. For example, consider Google Maps, navigation systems in vehicles, or hiking apps such as Swisstopo. This also includes public transport apps such as FAIRTIQ or EasyRide, which ensure that tickets are charged correctly. Today, it is hard to imagine that, less than 20 years ago, people were still travelling with a compass and a 1:25,000-scale map.

Backup7: Fail-Safe Internet Connectivity

To ensure a stable internet connection even if the main line fails, we now offer a powerful backup solution. In case of disruptions, a secondary line automatically takes over – within seconds and without any interruption. Your IP addresses remain fully preserved, and data traffic continues securely and encrypted.

#NerdsUnited 2025 was great! 🎉

Technology connects people, and we celebrated that in style on 3 September in Winterthur! 🍻🌭
From bratwurst and sweet treats to a wheel of fortune and (temporary) tattoos, it was an evening full of fun, conversation and nerd power. Thank you to everyone who attended and made #NerdsUnited 2025 an unforgettable event!

We look forward to seeing you again next time. Stay nerdy! 🤓

🎉 Number one for eight years in a row!

We have once again been named ‘Best Internet Provider for Private Customers’ in the BILANZ telecoms rating. A huge thanks to everyone who voted, to our customers for their trust, and to the entire Init7 team for their tireless efforts! 🙌

Update on our PoPs

Currently, 378 PoPs are active. This year, we have added 45 new PoPs and plan to add 15 more by the end of the year. Expanding our existing PoPs has been the focus of our infrastructure team this year. Not only do we want to offer fast internet to new customers, but also want our existing customers to benefit from even faster internet. After all, they are the foundation of our success. Our network engineering team is working continuously and energetically to further expand our infrastructure. You can get an impression of what this looks like in our LinkedIn post.
