I'm feeling a little nostalgic these days. On Sunday, 19 January 2025, Init7 celebrated its 25th birthday. On the same day, I visited theVintage Computer Festival https://vintagecomputerfestival.ch/en/home-en/ in Zurich, an event organised by retro computer enthusiasts who preserve the history of the computer in all its facets for posterity. From very young nerds to people probably well over 80, the eyes lit up at the fascinating exhibition. My personal highlight was winning a round of "Space Invaders" on a game console that was at least 40 years old - a brief moment of light-heartedness, just like when I was a teenager.

Bits & Bites #10

Winterthur, 22.01.2025

Hello [Vorname] [Nachname]

I'm feeling a little nostalgic these days.
On Sunday, 19 January 2025, Init7 celebrated its 25th birthday. On the same day, I visited the Vintage Computer Festival in Zurich, an event organised by retro computer enthusiasts who preserve the history of the computer in all its facets for posterity. From very young nerds to people probably well over 80, the eyes lit up at the fascinating exhibition. My personal highlight was winning a round of "Space Invaders" on a game console that was at least 40 years old - a brief moment of light-heartedness, just like when I was a teenager.

25 years of Init7 fill me with great gratitude.
I am grateful that you, as a customer, support us in our endeavour to ensure that the Internet is free, open and accessible to all. You already know about our success in the fibre optic dispute, but shortly before Christmas we were able to record another victory against the monopolists' efforts. After more than 11 years, Switzerland's telecoms regulator, ComCom, granted the request we submitted in March 2013 (!) and ordered the incumbent to peer with us on a zero-settlement basis. Essentially, the issue is that the Internet provider's technical monopoly over its end customers must not be abused. For the first time, a European regulator has put a stop to this long-standing practice. The "interconnect peering" case is important in the fight for net neutrality. Details can be found in our press release.

For our 25th anniversary, we have of course also come up with something special: our Easy7 subscription is now available throughout Switzerland, even for people without a fibre optic connection. Around 98% of the Swiss population can now benefit from our simplest broadband subscription: Unpack. Connect. Ready. Our 60-strong team has worked hard to make Easy7 easy for (almost) everyone. And the best thing is: Easy7 is now cheaper! Not only for new customers, as is the case with some market companions, but also for existing customers.
The price reduction will be applied automatically to all Easy7 subscriptions with the next invoice.

Last but not least, to mark our 25th birthday, we have reduced the setup fee to CHF 25 for 77 days. A good time to convince your friends, relatives and acquaintances of Init7 with our recommendation program.

Swisscom must operate zero-settlement peering with Init7

On 19 December 2024, the Federal Communications Commission (ComCom) issued an order in the ‘Interconnect Peering’ proceedings of Init7 against Swisscom, thus granting Init7's application of 28 March 2013. Swisscom is obliged to operate interconnections with Init7 on the basis of zero-settlement peering. The procedure took an unusually long time and included two OFCOM market analysis, several expert opinions from the Competition Commission (COMCO), a statement from the price supervisor and one expert opinion each from Init7 and Swisscom.

The Internet wholesale market in Switzerland

The Internet has become an integral part of our everyday lives. But how is the performance behind the services actually provided? What happens on layer 1 and layer 2 to enable this connection? This blog post takes a look at the Internet wholesale market in Switzerland and the technology behind it.

Easy7 becomes even more attractive!

Just in time for Init7's 25th anniversary, our Easy7 product is becoming even more attractive: "Unpack. Connect. Ready." now applies to almost everyone in Switzerland - no longer just those with a fibre optic connection. At the same time, we are lowering the price. Existing Easy7 customers will also benefit from the new price.

New Easy7 price:

  • CHF 44/month with annual billing
  • CHF 46.25/month with monthly billing

The new price applies with immediate effect. For customers with an annual bill, the difference for the current billing period will be credited in the next bill. For customers with a monthly bill, the adjustment to the new price will be made automatically.

Only for a short time: setup fee for CHF 25!

To celebrate our anniversary, we are not only lowering Easy7 prices, but also reducing the setup fee for everyone for 77 days. New customers and existing customers who wish to upgrade, downgrade or relocate now pay only CHF 25 for the setup fee. The promotion runs until 8 April 2025 - after which the regular setup fees will apply again.
