Dear reader, I am writing these lines in Krakow, Poland. This is where the bi-annual RIPE conference is currently taking place. RIPE is our Internet community which, in addition to many technical discussions, also deals with Internet administration in Europe. In other words, the administration of IP addresses and other necessary resources. Bottom-up governance is important in the RIPE community. We discuss new regulations until there is consensus. This is how it has worked for almost 35 years, in the interests of all Internet citizens, i.e. you. RIPE as a community has had an important influence on us as an Internet provider from the very beginning, because over time the understanding of how the "Internet must be without being broken" has matured. This conviction was the measure of all things when we launched the first "real" gigabit fiber-optic service in Switzerland 10 years ago: Fiber7 celebrates its 10th birthday today, on 22 May 2024. Read our latest blog entry to find out how this came about and why I was labelled "Mr. Fiber" back then. However, "Internet without being broken" not only requires liberal governance, technical equipment and expertise, but also people who enjoy working with us and carry the Init7 vision forward. We can only achieve this if the working environment is set up in such a way, that the work-life balance is guaranteed. We also attach great importance to diverse teams because they achieve better results. Diversity not only in terms of gender, but also in terms of origin: Farsi, French and Finnish are just three of the many native languages spoken by our colleagues. And by the way. There was also the #fiberglass dispute. A few weeks ago, the Competition Commission (finally) made its decision. It's a 100% victory for a monopoly-free Internet in Switzerland. Mission accomplished. ✅ I hope you find it interesting and enjoyable to read. Fredy "Mr Glass Fiber" Künzler

Bits & Bites #06

Winterthur, 22.05.2024

Bonjour, [Vorname] [Nachname]

Dear reader,

I am writing these lines in Krakow, Poland.

I hope you find it interesting and enjoyable to read.

Happy Birthday Fiber7!

22 May 2014 marks an important date in Init7's company history. It was the birth of Fiber7. You can read the whole story about Fiber7 in our latest blog "10 years of Fiber7".

Fiber7 - Competition

To celebrate, we are giving away 10 goodie bags!

All you have to do is:

  1. Follow Init7 on Instagram
  2. Like our birthday post and comment on it by describing Fiber7 in one word

Conditions of participation:
Everyone can take part in the competition until 31.05.24. The winners will be drawn by 14.06.24 and contacted via Instagram.

TV7 - Adaptation of programme portfolio

Init7 is revising the programme portfolio in the TV7 app and reorganising the TV infrastructure. This will improve the clarity and reliability of TV7. The TV app will continue to include over 100 channels in DE, FR, IT and EN.
In addition, these channels will also be made available as HLS playlists, which will enable TV consumption with your own media players on all Internet devices.
The multicast portfolio will continue to be available with more than 200 TV channels as a playlist. The switchover will take place automatically on 28 May 2024. The current multicast addresses will remain active for another three months.

Only a quarter of all IT positions are held by women. The reasons for this include prejudices, the way motherhood is handled and pay inequality. Although efforts are being made, this is not enough to combat the shortage of skilled labour.

Women at Init7

A higher proportion of women in the tech sector is a social and economic necessity. Init7 therefore specifically promotes the compatibility of career and family, for example with flexible part-time work, including management positions, a generous home office and six weeks' holiday. Equal pay for the same position, responsibility and experience is very important to us.

We are convinced that women and technology can go hand in hand. That's why every year we offer specifically young girls the opportunity to get an insight into the world of technology during the future day. Nevertheless, there is still a lot to be done to ensure that more women decide in favour of the tech sector and stay there.

Init7 Facts:

  • 32.2% women in the company as a whole, 18.2% in the purely technical teams
  • 4 out of 9 teams are led by women (44.4%)
  • 2 out of 5 members of the Executive Board are women (40%)

The final decision of the Competition Commission (COMCO) has been made. We have won! Swisscom will be forced to build optical fibers in such a way that the competition in the telecommunications industry desired by the legislator is not hindered.
